Antimicrobial Stewardship in the Sub-Saharan African Region

The ISID, in partnership with Pfizer, invites proposals focusing on Antimicrobial Stewardship (AMS) to tackle the critical public health threat of antimicrobial resistance in Sub-Saharan Africa. This initiative aims to develop and implement effective strategies that enhance antibiotic stewardship and combat AMR challenges in the region.

Overview

  • Funding of up to $100,000 for individual projects.
  • A total budget of $400,000 available to support 4-6 projects.
  • Opportunities for project outcomes to be published in ISID’s Open Access journals.
  • Potential for project showcases at international congresses, such as the upcoming ICID.

Priority Areas

  • Strengthening AMS practices: Enhancing appropriate antibiotic use in healthcare and community settings.
  • Regulatory reinforcement: Developing centralized AMS support structures within health systems.
  • Improved access to antibiotics: Ensuring rational use of both new and existing antibiotics.
  • Enhanced AMR surveillance: Establishing effective data sharing systems.
  • Advancements in diagnostics: Supporting evidence-based treatment decisions.
  • Promoting R&D: Encouraging innovations in AMR studies.
  • Sustainable antibiotic models: Developing effective production and supply frameworks.
  • Co-creation with patients: Raising awareness about AMR among underserved populations.

Eligibility & Requirements

  • Applicants must be based in Sub-Saharan Africa.
  • Eligible entities include academic institutions, NGOs, governments, and intergovernmental organizations focused on AMR.
  • Collaboration with relevant partners (e.g., universities, hospitals) is encouraged.
  • Local grassroots organizations targeting vulnerable populations are prioritized.
  • Proposals will be evaluated based on their relevance to the objectives, clarity of implementation plans, sustainability, and the inclusion of inter-institutional partnerships.
